Spark Teen English PosterThe reading program doesn’t start until June 9, but you can sign up for teen events now. Here’s the listing for all the summer events. Some need tickets, but for most you can just click the link to sign up. There is limited room available, so reserve your spot now!

 

Astronomy for Everyone: Size & Scale of the Universe
Friday, June 13, 2:00 p.m.
Astronomer Kevin Manning, former NASA consultant, has always been passionate about astronomy and wants to share the excitement with you! You’ll learn about the size and scale of the universe, the stars, and other celestial wonders using hands-on activities and assorted visuals. Then, we’ll use Kevin’s telescope and solar filters to observe sun spots. Open to all ages. Free tickets available June 2.

How to Draw Steampunk
Tuesday, June 17, 2:00 p.m.
Learn to draw some retro-futuristic steampunk. No art experience required! You’ll learn the basics of steampunk, artist Christine Thornton will teach you how to draw steampunk elements, and then you’ll draw a design based on our examples or your own imagination. Registration required. Grades 7-12.

Arduino Music
Friday, June 20, 2:00 p.m.
Make electronic music with Arduino! Use circuits and simple code to make an interactive musical instrument. No previous experience required. Please bring a laptop if possible. Registration required. Grades 7-12.

Inside Gaming
Monday, June 23, 2:00 p.m.
Want to know how a video game is created? Wonder what it takes to work in the industry? Find out from Dave Lang from Iron Galaxy Studios, developers of games including Divekick and Wreckateer. Registration required. Grades 7-12.

Nail Art
Tuesday, June 24, 2:00 p.m.
Turn your nails into works of art! We’ll provide polish, but feel free to bring your favorite colors too. Registration required. Grades 7-12.

Start Podcasting
Thursday, June 26, 2:00 p.m.
If you’ve been wanting to create an audio podcast, this program will help you get started. You’ll learn how to record, edit, and publish your podcast online. We’ll also do a sample podcast together. Feel free to bring a computer to try making a podcast on your own. Registration required. Grades 7-12.

Paracord Keychains and Cuffs
Monday, June 30, 2:00 p.m.
We’ll provide everything you need to create a parachute cord keychain and cuff bracelet. If you’re ever in a jam, take apart what you make and you’ll have super-strong paracord there to help you tie, climb, carry, or fix whatever has gone wrong. Registration required. Grades 7-12.

Movie: Ender’s Game
Wednesday, July 2, 2:00 p.m.
Watch the movie based on the classic sci-fi story of a brilliant young strategist who rises to the top of his class in Battle School while training to defend Earth against hostile aliens intent on exterminating the entire human race. Refreshments provided. Grades 7-12.

Craft Explosion
Monday, July 7, 2:00 p.m.
Let your creativity loose! We’re emptying our closets for you to scrapbook, decorate paper lanterns, make lucky string dolls, design magnets, or make your own unique art.
Registration required. Grades 7-12.

ACT Practice Test
Tuesday, July 8, 1:00–4:30 p.m.
This free practice test simulates actual test conditions. Be on time and bring #2 pencils, an approved calculator, and a snack if you choose. Results will be returned to students shortly after test day. Presented by Kaplan Test Prep. Registration required. Grades 9-12.

Throwing Things
Thursday, July 10, 2:00 p.m.
Get ready to have an awesome time throwing things! A professional juggler will show you how to toss three balls in the air, play with a spin jammer, and lots more. If you already know how to juggle, please join us and learn how to toss in different ways. One person will win a free set of three juggling beanballs. Registration required. Grades 7-12.

Divergent Fan Party
Tuesday, July 15, 2:00 p.m.
Do you know your faction? Are you dying to talk about the end of the series with other fans? Do you want to play Divergent games, have snacks, win prizes, and more? This is the fan

Video Game Design with Scratch
Thursday, July 17, 7:00 p.m.
Scratch is a free programming language that lets you try coding your own games and animations. Join us to make your own game! Please bring a laptop; a very limited number will be available to borrow. Registration required. Grades 7-12; also open to adults.
