Book Review: The Reece Malcolm List by Amy Spalding

ReeceMalcolmList“This is beyond weird. Long-lost mother finally sitting next to me, and we’re discussing cell phone laws and lunch.”

Devan’s dad may have been distant, but he was all she had. Until he died. Now Devan is being sent to live with Reece Malcolm, the mother she’s never known. In fact, Devan keeps a list of the things she knows about her mother, and there are only five things on it. Now she’s stuck in L.A. with a mom that she’s sure doesn’t want her around. At least she fits in at her new school, a performing arts high school where her singing talent is appreciated and there are even a few guys that seem interested in her. But should she get comfortable in L.A. when she can’t be sure that Reece won’t send her away just like she did when Devan was born?

My review:
I liked Devan a lot. She’s super-confident onstage at school, but in real life she’s insecure and nervous in her new situation. She has to learn how to stand up for herself and get the answers she deserves from the mom she feels abandoned her.  I really liked how the book showed that just because people don’t express their love in the way you want them to, doesn’t mean the love isn’t there. I would love a sequel to The Reece Malcolm List to spend more time with Reece, Devan, and Devan’s friends. Pick it up if you like the combination of family issues, finding your place in a new school, and a little boyfriend drama.
