GameLygaMy standard sequel spoiler alert applies. If you haven’t read the excellent I Hunt Killers, be aware a spoiler or two may lurk within this review if the sequel, Game

“As long as Billy was free, Jazz could never escape his past. His father would, he knew, find him and contact him. Somehow. Some way. No matter how many cops and FBI agents were looking for him and surveilling Jazz, Billy would find a way.

Jazz’s dad Billy is the world’s most successful serial killer. Since his escape from prison, Jazz has been trapped with the guilt that he unwittingly played a role in his father’s freedom. But at least he helped catch the Impressionist, a serial killer obsessed with Billy. At least he did some good in the world, too. But Jazz’s success has only brought him to the attention of the NYPD, who now need his help to get into the mind of yet another serial killer who may be connected to Billy. Jazz may be a profiling prodigy, but will the hunt for another killer push him over the edge?

My review:
Weak stomach warning: if you’ve got one, don’t check out this book. Jazz is after a serial killer, and that means death, dismemberment, and just a lot of unpleasantness. But if you can stand that, you’ll be rewarded with Jazz, a complex character trying to do his best in spite of his life-long training in how to do the worst. Jazz’s push and pull between the person he was raised to be and the person he wants to be is the most interesting part of this series for me.

Jazz is at his most mesmerizing when he’s channeling his Dad’s lessons in manipulation and getting into the mind of other killers, even though you know as a reader that that’s the worst thing he could be doing for his own sanity. Is catching killers worth the psychological price Jazz may pay? Check out Game and decide for yourself.
