Book Review: Altered by Jennifer Rush

Altered“Connor…showed up every couple of months to look the boys over, and to ask Dad if he thought ‘the units’ were ready. Dad said no every time. And when I asked him what the boys had to be ready for, he gave me his default answer: That’s classified.”

Four boys are being kept in a lab under Anna’s house. All suffering amnesia, the boys don’t know what they’re being trained and tested for, and Anna can’t stand that they’re locked up. But they won’t be locked up much longer. Sam, the boys’ leader, has planned a risky escape and Anna is forced to go with them. Now on the run, they’ll do anything – lie, steal, even kill – to solve the mystery of who they were before they were imprisoned.

My review:
This adrenaline-fueled story never stops once they bust out of the lab, and I loved the way the guys had to find clues to the past at safehouses, cemeteries, and even on their own bodies, using tattoos they had gotten before being taken to the lab. All these clues add up to a much bigger conspiracy than Anna can accept, especially because her Dad had been such a big part of it all. Will these fugitives find the answers they want, or only more questions? Will they ever be free of the Branch, the shadowy organization tracking them and trying to bring them back to the lab? Check out Altered by Jennifer Rush and find out.
