Book Review: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

“Some secrets only gave themselves up to those who’d proven themselves worthy.”

Those who walk the corpse road on St. Mark’s Eve are fated to die within the year. Blue has kept vigil at the road with her psychic mother for years, but she has never seen the spirits – until now.

He only tells her one name – Gansey – but the raven logo on his sweater marks him as one of the raven boys of Aglionby prep school. Blue knows raven boys are trouble, but now that she knows Gansey’s fate, she can’t forget him.

Gansey, meanwhile, is on a quest of his own, to find the tomb of a long-hidden king said to have come to rest along the ley lines, or energy paths, found in the area. His friends, raven boys all, are willing to risk everything they know to help Gansey find what he’s looking for – but will their quest help fulfill the prophecy of the corpse road?

My Review: If you’ve read my past reviews, you probably know Maggie Stiefvater is my absolute fave. I love her writing and her characters, and this book, the first in a new series, absolutely did not disappoint.

There are so many awesome characters: Blue’s mom and her friends, who all have some degree of psychic powers; Gansey, who is equal parts intelligence, charisma and self-doubt; and Gansey’s friends Adam, Noah, and Ronan, who all have secrets to hide and reasons they follow Gansey, sometimes even at their own peril. Their quest for Glendower, the lost king, takes them through amazing, surprising magic, but I won’t spoil it for you! Just let yourself be pulled into their journey and you won’t regret it. Almost too much happens in the book to mention, but it’s fair to say that at the end, you’ll feel like the real quest is just beginning. Can’t wait for the rest of the series.
