Book Review: Such Wicked Intent by Kenneth Oppel

My standard sequel alert applies: if you don’t want spoilers for the first book, read no further! My review of book one, This Dark Endeavor, can be found here.

“Modern science failed me. Alchemy failed. I trust nothing but am ready to try anything.”

Having lost his brother Konrad despite his harrowing quest for the Elixir of Life, Victor Frankenstein cannot accept his loss. His father burns each book in the Dark Library and Victor swears off alchemy. Until he finds the one book that wouldn’t burn.

Containing instructions on how the living can enter the spirit realm, the book gives Victor a chance to see his brother again, and, respecting no law of nature, Victor seizes that chance. But the spirit realm contains more secrets than Victor knew, including the possibility that he can bring his brother back from the dead. Now all they need is a new body.

My Review: Victor is as rash, arrogant, and impulsive as ever as he begins his quest to thwart death and get his brother back. In this book, Victor went even deeper into his quest for power over the natural order, but I couldn’t help being on his side since he was doing it (mostly) for his brother.

The book has a matter-of-fact supernaturalism that made it possible for me to readily accept that they could enter the spirit realm, and after that, I was just along for the ride. Although you could read this book by itself, I’d recommend reading book one, This Dark Endeavor, first, so you can get to know Victor’s self-sacrificing side as well as his darker more arrogant side that’s willing to do anything for knowledge.
