Book Review: Starters by Lissa Price

“A desperate Starter could do anything these days.”

When the Spore Wars broke out, people thought to be at risk – everyone under 20 and over 60 – received vaccinations. Unfortunately, though, everyone between 20 and 60 should have been vaccinated too, and they all died. Both of Callie’s parents died as a result of the Wars, leaving her and her brother Tyler unclaimed minors, living on the streets.

Starters like Callie aren’t allowed to work, but there are so many Enders now living to extreme old age, some even to 200 years old, that a new opportunity has arisen for Callie. Secretive company Prime Destinations will pay her big money to let them implant a chip in her head so that Enders can rent out her body and feel young again. But when Callie’s chip malfunctions and she wakes up in the middle of her rental, she finds out that Prime Destinations has much grander plans for Starters, plans so evil Callie will do anything to stop them.

My Review: I was pulled in by the super creepy premise and the fact that you can never trust any character to be who they claim to be.  Even Callie must pretend to be her own Ender renter to the other renters she meets. If all these Enders walking around in Starter bodies is not disturbing enough for you, wait until the end of the book – you’ll never guess who was a renter and who was being rented all along!Starters is different than anything I’ve read in a while. Check it out if you like a dark future with a great sci-fi twist.
