Book Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Sequel alert! Don’t even pick up this book unless you’ve read the excellent first book in the series, Divergent. Insurgent starts right where Divergent left off and you will be lost if you haven’t read it. Now, on to my review (Divergent spoilers ahead)…

“Sometimes, if you want the truth, you have to demand it.”

In the aftermath of the Erudite attack on Abnegation, in which Dauntless’ soldiers were mind-controlled into being Erudite’s killing machines, Tris Prior’s world has fallen apart. Her parents are dead, her faction is scattered, and worst of all, she is tormented by the death of her friend Will, who she was forced to kill during the simulation attack.

But Tris can’t let all that keep her from finding out the truth about why the Erudite attacked in the first place. She’ll enter the foreign worlds of Amity, Candor, and even the factionless sector in her quest to discover why her world is on the brink of war and why the Divergent are being hunted.

My Review: Tris is just as difficult as ever, but maybe that’s why I like her. She’s frustrating, stubborn, and hardheaded, but also brave, smart and willing to make hard choices. I loved seeing the other factions as well as the factionless, and finding out more about the secrets and motives behind the simulation attack.

For me, Insurgent was all about the secrets we keep and the secrets that are kept from us. Tris and Tobias (aka Four) mean everything to one another and yet they each keep secrets about their own pasts and their own pain. The Abnegation and Erudite are both keeping a bombshell from the other three factions. But nothing stays secret forever, so check out Insurgent by Veronica Roth to find out more about Tris, Tobias, the Divergent, and their secrets. You won’t be disappointed.
