Book Review: I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga

“Jazz was afraid of two things in the world, and two things only. One of them was that people thought that his upbringing meant that he was cursed by nature, nurture, and predestination to be a serial killer like his father. The second thing…was that they were right.”

When Jazz’s serial killer Dad was finally caught, Jazz thought he was free of his disturbing past. But when a new serial killer arrives in town, Jazz must face the fact that he may be the only one who can catch him. Unfortunately, he can’t know for sure whether the hunt will help him rise above his past or if it will just stir up his own killer instincts.

My Review: First of all, do I even need to say that if you have a low tolerance for death and dismemberment, don’t read this book? It’s about a serial killer, people! Well, actually, it’s about Jazz, who is trying desperately to be sure he won’t end up being a killer like his dad. His internal struggle and fears about his true nature made me root for him to rise above his terrible past and his fragmented, sad, and at times brutal memories.

The way Jazz uses his insights to help the police get into the mind of a serial killer even as he tries to police his own thoughts and actions showed how far he was willing to go to be a better man than he was raised to be. Try I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga if you like characters with a dark and complex past, if you enjoy the mayhem of a serial killer book, or if you love a cliffhanger ending.
