Queen of the Dead

“I had, once upon a time, ruled at the top of Groundsboro High society. Now I was dead, and almost everyone I knew had graduated. And I was freaking crying…again. My afterlife sucked.”

Queen of the Dead is the sequel to last summer’s The Ghost and the Goth, but you don’t necessarily have to read the first one to enjoy this one.  You can check out my review of The Ghost and the Goth here.

This time around, Will and Alona have settled into a pretty good partnership – by helping other ghosts find closure, he gets them off his back and Alona gets the good karma points she needs to get back into the light for good (since she was kicked out shortly after her death).

But in the course of helping one such ghost, Will and Alona meet Mina, a ghost-talker just like Will, and the first one he’s ever met besides his dad, who killed himself, leaving Will with more questions than answers about his abilities.  Fortunately, Mina seems to know some of those answers, even if she’s less than honest with Will at first.  Unfortunately, Will and Mina seem to have forgotten that Alona is supposed to be Will’s spirit guide and she will NOT be ignored.

My Review: This book is a major game-changer in the series, revealing secrets about Will’s legacy from his father, as well as raising questions about why Alona was really sent back from the light.  It definitely made me want to know more – thank goodness the third book in this series will be coming out in 2012, because there is clearly a lot more to the ghost-talker secret society, and Alona’s actions have put her in a position I don’t know how she’ll cope with.  This is a solid second installment in this series – it’s fast-paced, funny, and a great read for summer.
