Boyfriends with Girlfriends by Alex Sanchez

“Well, maybe you’re right. A relationship with a girl would be easier.  But that’s not an option for me. Maybe that’s why I don’t want to believe in bi people. It feels sort of unfair that you have that choice and I don’t.”

Okay, try to keep up…  Lance, who’s gay, starts going out with Sergio, who’s bisexual. Even though Sergio has had relationships with girls and guys, Lance thinks bi is just a stop on the train line to Gayville.  Meanwhile, Sergio’s friend Kimiko, who’s a lesbian, befriends Lance’s best friend Allie, who’s straight but soon feels an attraction to Kimiko that leaves her wondering if she could be bi, too.  Ah, love.  Is anything more complicated?

My Review: Love is just as exciting, painful, and confusing whether you want a boyfriend, a girlfriend, or your new best friend, and this book makes all those ups and downs seem real.  The way the characters deal with their sexuality and finding themselves shows the insecurity, jealousy, and anticipation we can all feel when falling for someone new. Tons of dialogue, which I love, makes the book quick and fun in spite of the love angst, and if you’re a romantic at heart, you’ll like the sweet ending.

Boyfriends with Girlfriends by Alex Sanchez is now available at the library.
