Solomon’s Thieves

Our winter reading program, 6 Weeks – 6 Books, is into week two.  I’m reading six books in six weeks along with you guys, and here’s my second book review.  If you want to participate, make sure to grab a book log next time you’re at the library.

“…our only loyalty shall be to each other and to any brothers who join our band… to reclaim the treasure of the poor Knights of the Temple of Solomon.”

Martin has spent years on Crusade as a member of the noble Knights Templar, only to return to France to find that all members of the order are to be arrested under suspicion of performing secret, blasphemous rites.  After being imprisoned and tortured, Martin makes a daring escape, goes on the run, and soon discovers that a lost Templar treasure may hold the key to the fate of the order.

My Review: Part adventure, part history, part comedy of errors, this graphic novel has it all: kidnappings, sword fights, lies, disloyalty, betrayal, and even a couple of funny sidekicks make an appearance.  If you’re interested in the legend of the Knights Templar, especially their fall from grace and ultimate fate, this book is for you.  If you’re not all that familiar with the Templars, I’d recommend reading the author’s note at the end of the book first, because he talks about his inspiration for the book and a little about Templar history.  I just hope there’s a sequel soon, because Martin and his band are hatching their treasure-seeking plan when this book ends, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.

Solomon’s Thieves by Jordan Mechner is now available at the library.
