Getting Revenge on Lauren Wood

Helen Worthington and Lauren Wood were practically born best friends.  That is, until the day Lauren hung Helen out to dry after setting her up as the school’s biggest snitch.  Thank goodness Helen moved away that same summer.  But she NEVER forgot what Lauren did to her, and when she moves back to town for her senior year, she vows to get revenge.

With a new name (Claire Dantes),  a new look, and even a new nose (thanks to an accidental fall down the stairs two years ago), Helen knew Lauren would never recognize her.  Lauren succeeded in betraying Helen Worthington. Now Helen is getting revenge on Lauren Wood.

My Review: I’m not gonna lie; I love a good revenge story.  Maybe it’s the thrill of seeing someone get what’s coming to them.  Maybe it’s the way the person getting revenge does all the things we wish we could do to the jerks who try to bring people down.  Hand me a well thought-out revenge plan and I’ll eat it up.

From Helen’s revenge notebook, to her lists of what makes someone popular, to her subtle ways to turn people against Lauren, I liked her style.  But she doesn’t only have a taste for vengeance; she has a softer side that just won’t let her be as mean to other girls as Lauren was to her.  That side of Helen makes it clear that whatever her revenge, she’ll never be as nasty as Lauren, which makes her likeable in spite of the things she does.

This was a funny book that lets you live vicariously through Helen’s plotting.  It’s a quick read with likeable characters that you might like if you enjoyed another book I reviewed, The Karma ClubOn a side note, I also loved that Helen’s new last name was Dantes, a nod to the ultimate revenge tale, The Count of Monte Cristo, and its hero, Edmond Dantes.

Getting Revenge on Lauren Wood by Eileen Cook is now available at the library.
