Alex Van Helsing: Vampire Rising

Alex has told people all his life that just because his last name is Van Helsing doesn’t mean he’s some kind of vampire hunter off the pages of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.  But on the grounds of his new boarding school, as he watches a girl turn to dust in front of his eyes, he has to rethink everything his father ever told him about vampires being nothing more than fiction.

From that moment on, Alex is plunged into another world, one where vampires are coming for him and it’s kill or be killed.  Turns out, his family name isn’t just a legend, but a legacy.  Fighting for his life on the rooftops of his school, dodging bullets, running from zombies, and turning fanged freaks into ash is all part of fulfilling his destiny as a vampire hunter.

My review: Fast-paced and bursting with action, fights, and chase scenes, this is the book for you if you want an adrenaline-fueled read.  The vampires are out for Alex’s blood, and I liked that they were not the modern type of cuddly vamps.  The unusual back story of the vampire clan leader is an interesting part of the book but doesn’t slow down the story.

Alex’s family’s secrets, especially his father’s reasons for leaving vampire hunting behind, are only briefly mentioned, and there’s plenty of room to learn more about Alex in the sequel, which is now being written.  I loved the action, unique vampire origins, secret societies, and Alex’s friends.  Give it a try if you like the Alex Rider series and don’t mind fangs.

Alex Van Helsing: Vampire Rising by Jason Henderson is now available.
