You Are What You Hear

In Candor, Florida, everyone is perfect.  Once they move into town, kids are transformed into everything their parents always wanted them to be.  Only Oscar Banks, whose father founded the town, knows the truth: Candor is saturated with subliminal messages that control everyone who moves there.  The Messages are all-powerful, addicting, and strip you of free will.

Oscar can supress the Messages because he’s lived there longer than anyone, but he must be sure no one ever finds out he’s not under their control.  But everything changes when Nia moves to town. Oscar doesn’t want Nia to turn into a Candor clone, but is he willing to risk everything he’s built, even his very self, to help Nia get away from Candor?

This book is infuriating but all-too plausible.  I mean, don’t we all know someone whose personality we would tweak if we had the chance?  Where do you draw the line?  Oscar fights against the Messages, yet also uses them to get what he wants.  Is he a hero, or just as bad as his father?  Should he risk everything to help Nia?

“Candor” by Pam Bachorz is available now at the library.  It’s intriguing and chilling, and I hope you give it a try.  I guarantee an amazing ending, so hurry up and read it!
