It’s Teen Tech Week!

Teen Tech Week is March 8-14 and this year’s theme is “Press Play @ your library.” So this week, why not try an audiobook?
We’ve got audiobooks of some of your favorite books and series, like the Twilight series on CD, the newest Artemis Fowl on CD, and books on Playaway. What’s Playaway? I’m glad you asked! It’s the newest format for audiobooks, and it’s an entire audiobook preloaded onto a digital device about the size of an MP3 player. So now you can take your favorite books with you anywhere you go.
As of today, we have a small collection of Playaways, but we’re getting more and more. As always, let me know if your favorite title belongs on this list!

Going stir crazy?
People, don’t let the snow and cold slowly drive you insane. If you’re stuck inside and bored, check out the Exploratorium online for hours of time-killing fun.
My faves? The depth spinner, candy-o-matic, and frog tracker. What’s your favorite?

Figure it out
OK, little known fact about me. I would love to know how to instantly pick a lock just like in the movies. Well, thanks to www.howstuffworks.com, I can figure out how locks work, and maybe someday realize my dream (but don’t worry, I won’t use my newfound power for evil).
Do you want to know…
…how shaking the screen makes it erase? Check out ‘How Etch-a-Sketch works .”
…why your car is making that crazy noise? Try ‘How a muffler works.”
…why it’s called the festival of lights? Go to ‘How Hanukkah works.”
This site is addicting! Just being on the site to blog this, it sucked me in for way longer than I had planned.
Found something you want to know even more about? Hey, the library probably has a book about it…

Pulling an all-nighter? We can help!

The library just signed up for Ask Away, a 24/7 chat reference service that lets you talk to a librarian any time of the day or night. It could be us answering your questions, or it could be librarians from all over the country.
Go to our website at www.winfield.lib.il.us and click the “Ask a Librarian” link or the “Connect to AskAway” button.
You can ask me anytime, too. Comment or email me if you’ve got a question or suggestion about the blog, the young adult section of the library or a book you want!

Teen Tech Week Poll
March 4-10 is Teen Tech Week. Today’s poll is about libraries with profiles on MySpace. What do you think?
A. I’d love it if our library was on MySpace! It would be so much easier to keep track of what was going on at the library.
B. It would be weird and unwelcome. Kind of like having your parents chaperoning the prom.
C. MySpace is overrated anyway…the last thing I need is another Friend to keep track of.
D. What is this MySpace you speak of? I just got back from living under a rock.
